“Hey, we could do that…”

Hello! We’re Megan & Sam, two young adults traveling part-time in our 2007 Ford Escape XLT and working on our new adventure-mobile, our 1995 Ford E-350 Collins Shuttle Bus. We begun dating in 2017 when we were both teenagers, and now into our twenties, we’ve been trying to tap more into our adventurous sides. Like many others, we’ve been enticed with the #VanLife social media movement and other similar nomadic or minimalist lifestyles. Since finding these communities, days of dreaming turned into impatience. We finally threw in the towel. “Why can’t we start now? We could do that with what we have now...” Thus, The Great Escape U.S. was born! Since this decision in October of 2020, we have slowly made our way through the Western Coast of United States in our small SUV and hope to reach even further distances in our renovated Bus.

Thank you for tuning in to these imperfect, spontaneous adventures of ours!

The Faces Behind The Page

  • Megan

Megan is a 23 year-old Portuguese-American with dreams of exploring the world. She is a recent graduate of California State University San Marcos where she earned a B.S. in Biology. She loves to dance and passionately sing in the car during road trips. You can find her thrifting around the U.S., waving ‘hello’ to the roadside animals, and taking a dip in any body of water she can find.

  • Sam

Sam is a 24-year-old Native American, Michigan-born man who moved to California in his early teens. He graduated in 2021 from California State University Northridge where he earned a B.A. in Communication Studies. As of late, Sam is keeping his weekdays busy by trying to get his foot in the door of the legal field. Traveling the country in his free time has allowed him to form deeper connections within himself and the Earth he walks.

 FAQs

  • We started traveling in late 2020 in our Ford Escape. Our screen name is a play on words since our car-model is an Escape and we are based in the United States.

  • It’s cheap and you can start doing it now! We decided to use our SUV to start traveling because it was what we had at our disposal. It didn’t make sense then to purchase a travel trailer, a van or anything else when we’d only be traveling a couple months (if that) out of the year. If you’re considering living nomadically, we highly recommend giving it a test run in your regular vehicle first!

  • We were given an amazing opportunity to purchase one for cheap and we figured we’d give it a try! As much as we love to travel in our SUV, we hope this bigger space will allow us to be on the road for longer periods of time. Someday we hope the Bus will serve us as a home, a remote work studio or whatever else we desire it to be. We also get to refine our building skills with this new challenge!
